Factory Fuel Filter FFM Removal

Edited

Overview

A common question we get is if you are able to complexly remove (delete) the factory Fuel Filter Manger (FFM).

The answer is, YES. We do it frequently!

Why would you remove it?

  • You installed a new primary fuel filter system, like the Remote Fuel Filter Kit or another spin-on filter system

  • You installed a new lift pump system like FASS Titanium or AIRDOG 5G that has built in filters

  • The factory fuel filter is leaking or broken

  • You want to upgrade the fuel line size going direct to the injection pump, as part of installing a better lift pump system

How To Remove

  • Remove the 2 15mm bolts holding the FFM to the lower intake manifold

  • Disconnect the fuel heater plug

    • The wiring is analog for this, you can simply leave it disconnected

  • Disconnect the water in fuel sensor plug

    • The wiring is analog for this, you can simply leave it disconnected and the light on the dash will NOT illuminate

  • Unbolt the water drain valve from the thermostat housing.

    • This is only used for the factory FFM, the water drain valve and hose connecting it will get discarded with the FFM

  • Remove the hoses from the water drain valve

    • Because the hose won't pull back thru under the intake manifold unless the valve is removed

  • Disconnect the short 3/8" hose from the back side of the FFM by removing the hose clamp

    • This is the supply line from the lift pump. You'll tie your RFFK in here if you are installing that upgrade (see other articles)

  • Disconnect the fuel hose from the DS4 injection pump (1994 and later trucks)

  • Pull up on the FFM to remove

    • You may have to fish the water drain and injection pump supply house out with it if you didn't cut them. They will pull up/out with the FFM as they should be disconnected now

Tips

  • You can suction the fuel out of the FFM before removing any lines, to prevent a mess, if you have the tools

  • You can cut the hoses instead of disconnecting them as none will be re-used (If you are removing the FFM and not replacing it)

    • This can greatly speed up the removal process

  • DB2 trucks may need to remove the lower intake manifold to get at the fuel supply line on the back end of the injection pump
