Checking harmonic balancers, Crank pulleys and crankshaft snout
The Problem
If you find that you have a wobbling crank pulley or balancer you have to do some diagnostics to make sure that installing a new Fluidampr and Billet Pulley will actually fix your wobble.
The Solution
It could be both the pulley and the balancer or it could be just one of them, BUT in our experience it could also be a bent snout on a crankshaft!
Process for Guaranteed Success
Remove the belt, pulley, and balancer
Inspect the old balancer and pulley. Cracked or missing rubber insulators is a big issue with age! They may just need replaced for this reason.
Pull the ecm1 fuse, or unplug the PMD, to prevent the truck from starting while allowing it to crank.
DB2 trucks can remove the shutoff solenoid wire
Have someone crank the engine to verify, ideally with a magnetic base dial indicator, or at least visually check that the crank snout isn't wobbling.
If the crank snout is straight, we can proceed with a new Fluidampr and Billet pulley, ensuring a successful repair that won't leave you out of service again! Links are below.
